Intent
At our school, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our intention is that children develop skills in composing and performing, as well as transcribing and describing music. We are committed to developing a curiosity and enjoyment for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We aim to provide children with the opportunity to progress to the next level of their creative excellence.
Implementation
Our music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. Through the musical program Charanga, teachers deliver inclusive lessons for all children to access the musical curriculum in a fun and engaging way, promoting a love of music. Charanga provides children with a wide range music genres so that all children are able to practice their interest of music in school, and this drives learning. Children are exposed to musical vocabulary, including pulse, tone and beat so that music can be discussed confidently and these elements of music develop children’s ability to master musical instruments.
Playing various instruments, including voice and glockenspiel, enables children to use a range of methods to create notes, as well as how to read basic music notation. They also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music.
Impact
Enjoyment and skills within music enables children to develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as within our multi-cultural world. Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose, including as a listener, creator or performer. Children are able to discuss music, sharing their thoughts and ideas around pulse, tone and beat. Singing, playing instruments and sharing their love of music are done with confidence. At Lambton Primary School, each and every child’s musical talents are celebrated with class performances and videos. Our music curriculum prepares children to continue embracing music at secondary school, and to continue practice of a musical instrument.
